James Cameron's Avatar Review

The movie of the year is finally here. Yes, THE MOVIE OF THE YEAR.

James Cameron is one of the best filmmakers in history, directing favorites such as Terminator 2 and Titanic. So, the expectations have been high, and the hype is phenomenal. I'll save you time right now and say that it lives up to everything you've heard. First let me start with the visuals.

The strongest point of the movie is the revolutionizing special effects. I can imagine what the people watching King Kong (1933) and Star Wars (1977) feel, saying how "Yup, movies are changing". The world of Pandora is simply amazing, with every detail attracting my attention. The plants, the animals, and everything prove that Cameron has pretty much created a new world. The actual Na'Vi (blue people) look incredible. You remember Polar Express, and you've seen/heard of the new movies A Christmas Carol? Same technology here, except Cameron makes it look love action. You really have to see this movie to believe the visuals, as the trailers barely even give you a sample of it.

The 3D is also revolutionizing. James Cameron actually invented a new camera to make the 3D with. Its a camera with two lenses, sort of representing two eyes. This makes the 3D look so realistic, and certainly not gimmicky *cough* Spy Kids *cough*. There's nothing popping out at you like in Spy Kids just to show off the 3D. While watching it, you just feel so immersed in James Cameron's world you feel like you are actually there on Pandora.

The story isn't revolutionizing, but it gives some good messages about racism and more specifically the Native Americans (or at least that is what came to mind as I was watching it) and gives each character a personality that fits the story well. Sometimes the writing ids a little awkward, but its not really a big deal.

Acting, for the most part is good, and this is by far Sam Worthington's best film. He is way better in this than in Terminator, showing that he can give a more emotional performance when he needs to.

Avatar comes down to be the most epic film of the year. It has a strong story, and literally revolutionizing special effects, non-headache 3D (never thought that would happen), and it is just a piece of art. See it the best way you can (if not IMAX 3D, at least regular 3D), because Avatar is a visual masterpiece that you cannot miss.
